Now He belongs to the ages (or Goodbye, Frazetta)

[Enlarge Here]

It is with a heavy heart I must acknowledge the death of one of my favorite artist, and one one the finest ever, Frank Frazetta. To bring out an old cliche a picture is worth a thousand words, and he did so many, of such stunning achievement that I could talk from here until my passing and sill not do it justice. He was timeless far before his death, but as with many people who spring from this mortal coil, it takes such an event to acknowledge how lucky we are to have had him. The word art has such a nebulous halo around it, but, if I may quote Herzog, "it makes our life BETTER". And that is exactly what this man did. Cheers, Frank.

Frazetta and Youth

[Enlarge Here]

Another beautiful picture

(note: the idea that all drugs are inherently evil is something I definitely do not agree with. Nor, likely, did Frazetta. There is a famous story where Frazetta turned in a well done anti-smoking ad. And when he turned it in he had the art in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Do what you got to do to keep the room over your head yours, I guess)

An Easy Morning?

Things never go quite as planned, sometimes
(such as my recent lack of posts. Sorry, been a bit sick.)

Pellucida via Frazetta

Frazetta artwork for Edgar Rice Burroughs' Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucida series, which is full of interesting ideas (and seemingly made for Frazetta) such as a hollow earth lit by a small sun inside--resulting in permanent nigh noon-- and crawling with dinosaurs and lizard men.

Mad Monster Party poster (by Frank Frazetta)

Frank Frazetta and Rankin-Bass, an odd but wonderful combination. For the theatrical release only (and quite an enjoyable romp it is).

Woman, thou art divine

I hate and love Frazetta at the same time. How does he make it look so awesome, something seemingly beyond mere mortals? That hair, those crab like hands, those unbelievable hips; something that shows what the beauty of hand drawn work can do. Some may call him old fashioned. They're right, it is out of style for paintings to have balls and actually connect to the people.

Four Fabulous Comic Covers

Sadly, not written by Steve Gerber.

The original and the best.

Not my favorite incarnation, but a funny picture nonetheless.

This is Frank Frazetta as we know him.

These and much more available at Tom Heroes(be sure to check out his Nintendo Ads as well).

The lighter side of Frazetta

Mention Frank Frazetta to anyone in the know, and they gush about his depictions of Death Dealer, wish they had more walls (only three or four) to put up his paintings, or silently curse that his phenomenal E.C. comics work like Squeeze Pulp(which feels somewhat similar to parts of the latter Bakshi film Hey Good Lookin') was so few in number. Hell, speaking of Bakshi, they wax negatively and positively --both equally valid to an extent-- about his film collobration with him, Fire and Ice.

But one thing you never hear--and probably because they didn't know-- is his great funny animals drawings. What, they say, the man who made Conan the Barbarian an icon drew wussy rabbits and other creatures that are best left eaten. Well, they are tasty animals, but beautiful and well constructed, and with more humor and humanity to them then most of the genre. More Bugs Bunny than Thumper. And believe it or not, this is what the real Frazetta is. Or so the man himself claims. Checkout for yourself, and decide.
