Rules of a different game

Suddenly that idea of the aborted tobey hooper spider-man film in the 80's seems alright.

An alternative Stan Lee (with pizzazz!)

I think people missed out by not casting Handsome Lumberjack Stan Lee in their films (I'm looking at you, Fellini).

Head(s) on my shoulders

Anyone else get black flag's "nervous breakdown" stuck in their head after seeing this?

Zappa's Money Marvel Shot

A bemusing advertisement from 1968 (Dardevil #38, I believe) where two cultral giants meet.
[I wonder if John K. , who loves both, happened to have seen this. ]

A Kirby slice of Kubrick

From the stunning but quite different 2001 marvel adaption (oddly from 1971). Still a pairing not to miss.

Elementary, My Captain

Literature upon literature, a titan against a titan. Also, an interesting read
(the climax from Captain America Comics #10, 1942 where they stole from whatever literature they felt like).

Galactus by Lee and Moeibus

Sample panels of an intriguing(unfortunately out of print) 1988 comic called Parable, which united two comic giants; Stan Lee and Moebius. Definitely worth checking out for those that can find it(although those averse to religious debate or overtones might find it plodding. I did not).

Black and white Hounds

I love black and white Marvel comic books, I love Sherlock Holmes, And Val Mayerik is one of my favorite artists. So obliviously I am thrilled to show this comic.

An odd choice for a pin-up, bit nonetheless excellent.

Space defined

Gave I mentioned recently how much I love Kirby's work? Amazing, even without entirely being pencils

Carter by Chan

[Enlarge Here]

Ernie Chan was one of my favorite Conan the barbarian artists, adding superb details and figures to his lengthy run. Here is his rendition of John Carter of Mars for Marvel. Makes one wonder how that proposed Pixar film will turn out.

I just liked Kirby's use of perspective and size here; thought I would share it with you.

Black Brother (by O'Shaughnessy and Colan)

Sergius O’Shaugnessy is really Denny O'Neil, as he was a big Mailer fan. So much so that he tried to live up to the whole hard living and drinking Irishman, which only resulted in losing chunks of his life.

Black Brother(which by the way never continued despite what the corner title says) was published in Savage Tales #1, and was one of the many experiments Marvel tried in the 1970'. Some of them, like Man-Thing, were phenomenally successful. This, not so much. It certainty has some interesting ideas, despite the somewhat pretentious foreword, but it never quite gels. Nonetheless, Gene Colan is one of my favorite artists, and he is on top of his game here.

The Iron Warrior (by Ditko and Lee)

It's always good to recall the work of two pillars of the comic book format, especially if it is something rarely seen or not the first thing that comes to mind when one one thinks of their name. Originally shown in STRANGE TALES# 108(1963).

Twinkle Twinkle (by Carlin and LaRocque)

And now for a comic often considered to be a camp classic, or at least impossibly bad yet good. Sorry about size of scans, they are second hand from a friend and these were the biggest I got. Click to enlarge.

A million questions(not to pointlesly question the story but point out certin facets of insanity): Where the hell is Maey Jane putting all that food? How is Galactus aim so poor> And why is the sat puff marshmallow man guarding a giant twinkie?

Ah, what the hell, it is a excuse to cut loose.

Initially I was reluctant to even post this, I'd rather spot great comics by the heavyweights(Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Gene Colan, Steve Gerber) but then again this is just too weird not post. It does seem to highlight a time when Marvel was ok with parodying itself, ala the much more successful Not Brand Ecch!.
