Surreal Shamanic Sunday Funnies (by Alejandro Jodorowsky)

Alejandro Jodorowsky, the(shall we say) unusual director behind El Topo, Holy Mountain and Santa Sigre( my favorite of his) also did many arresting comics for Mexico newspapers.

A good selection selection(with larger scans ) lays Here

Enjoy.

A King's Trip

Rarebit is good, but let's not forget the other little strip McCay had. It has its moment as well

Alley dinosaurs

I mostly like the casual way throwing of th rock into the (awesomely drawn) dinosaurs, but the whole strip is fun of a bygone era.

Apples to Apples

[Enlarge Here]

Back in the day when strips were gigantic (see the larger Krazy Kat for examples) and not just the size of candy wrapper, it was common for popular series to feature a topper, or extra comic. This, Colonel Potterby and the Duchess was from creator of Blondie. Enjoy.

Destructive Advertising

Well, I'll be swizzled, Herzog was right, commercials will destroy us. That old Winsor McCay was a visionary.

Smokey Stover Double Shot

A rather amusingly demented strip done by Bill Holman. I particularly enjoy the vaudeville like atmosphere of these two comics.

The Prince and the Dragon

Beautiful image for the long running newspaper strip (by Hal Foster), emphasizing the adventure, thrills and sense of wonder one can have when a great drawing awaits in an unfolded newspaper.

Bring me back, bring me a brick (with Krazy Kat)

Now this is one fairy tale that should go on forever. You are a master, George Herriman

Klaymation Kat?!

I love stop-motion and I love newspaper strips, but I have rarely seen them combined. This makes me really wish there were more.

That Screwball Cat

A newspaper strip (originally ran alongside Smokey Stover) that existed for pure comedy, and all the sound effects, double takes and foibles that came with it.

A puzzle in panel form

I'm not sure what is going on here, but I'm willing to go on the journey.

A Long Trip

Always good to trek back to the masters, like McCay.

Last Steps

[Enlarge Here]

Maybe it's odd to start at the ending, but this strip--Caniff's last for the Terry-- is still one of most evocative and well done pieces ever, even if you didn't follow the history that closely. Hopefully more posts on him will fill that gap. In the meantime, enjoy.

Dreams and Dinosaurs

[Enlarge Here]

How is it with ten panels McCay can tell a story better than most 2 hour films? Always a wonderful surprise with this artist.

Baby Elephant ( by Winsor McCay)

[Enlarge Here]

One of the many pre-little Nemo strips McCay did; proving his versatility, but also that finding the right conduit for your talents is just as important as having them.
